What is the difference between bodily injury insurance and medical payments insurance?

As you can probably guess, bodily injury (BI) insurance and medical payments (MP) insurance both cover the cost of medical treatment after a car or motorcycle accident. However, there is a key difference. The purpose of BI insurance is to cover the cost of medical treatment required by other people if you cause a car or motorcycle accident. MP insurance covers the cost of treatment for you and your passengers.

Another important difference is that bodily injury liability insurance is legally required; you can be heavily fined and even lose your license for driving without it. Medical payment insurance is not legally required, but is a very good thing to have following an accident.
