Hybrids safer than traditional cars

Posted on November 22nd, 2011 No Comments

A new study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has revealed that hybrid cars are safer than traditional cars. In fact, passengers in hybrids are 25% less likely to be injured in car accidents than passengers in conventional cars of the same model.

Hybrids are safer than traditional cars because they are heavier. The high-tech batteries are so heavy they weigh about 10% more than normal cars. Heavy cars protect people inside the car better because they tend to absorb most of the impact.

However, hybrids are 20% more likely to hit pedestrians because people cannot hear them approaching. They are so quiet that the Department of Transportation is trying to find ways to make them louder.

If you are considering buy a hybrid vehicle, your insurance policy may change. Many car insurance companies offer discounts on hybrids. If you or someone you love is looking to purchase car insurance, contact a Chicago car insurance agent of Insure on the Spot at 773-202-5060 today.

Posted on November 16th, 2011 No Comments

Two Chicago police officers were injured on Tuesday night when a pickup truck struck their squad car in the Far South Side Roseland neighborhood.

The officers were responding to a call for assistance when the accident occurred. Three men in the other car suffered minor injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals. The 29 year-old driver was given a citation for failing to yield to an emergency vehicle and driving without insurance.

Both officers were transported to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital with trauma, but reports say their injuries are not life-threatening.

Driving without car insurance is against the law and can come with a hefty fine. But more importantly, it helps cover you financially in case of an accident. Car crashes cost Chicago residents billions

Posted on November 9th, 2011 No Comments

A new study by AAA reveals that Chicago area residents spend $11.3 billion a year on vehicle crashes.

Even individuals not involved in car accidents pay for it. To put it in perspective, AAA broke the costs down to $1,180/person living in Chicago and surrounding areas. This is higher than the rates for traffic congestion costs. On average, congestion costs residents $9.5 billion a year in wasted gas and lost time. That’s $1,112 per person.

The cost of motor vehicle accidents are a major economic threat to Chicago’s sustainability. AAA Chicago suggests lawmakers and transportation planners enforce laws more strictly, build public support for transportation funding, and think of new ways to improve safety.

It is required by law to have vehicle insurance, but more importantly, insurance protects you and your car in case of an accident. If you or someone you love is looking to purchase car insurance, contact a Chicago car insurance agent of Insure on the Spot at 773-202-5060 today.

Motorcycle accident victim lucky to be alive

Posted on November 2nd, 2011 No Comments

A 40 year-old motorcyclist is lucky to be alive after he suffered severe injuries in a motorcycle accident last month.

The man was stopped a red light when a pickup truck rear-ended his motorcycle and threw him into the car in front of him. After dropping to the pavement, the truck that hit him then ran him over and trapped the rider under the other car.

Passersby rushed to his aid and had to lift the car up to free him. Others helped put out a fire that broke out on impact. Just three weeks after the accident, the motorcyclist was released from the hospital. He suffered a broken leg, back injuries which require him to wear a back brace, and brain injuries.

It is important, and also required by law, to own motorcycle insurance. Insurance will help protect you financially in case of a motorcycle accident by ensuring your medical expenses are covered. If you live in the Chicago area and are looking for affordable motorcycle insurance, contact the Chicago motorcycle insurance agents of Insure on the Spot at 773-202-5060.

Auto policies you may not need

Posted on October 27th, 2011 No Comments

With auto insurance rates increasing, many motorists are looking for ways to cut corners to save some cash. Depending on the age and condition of the vehicle, there are a few policies drivers could actually do without.

- Car Rental Damage Insurance: Comprehensive car insurance policies cover rental car damage, so there is no need to pay for additional coverage at the checkout counter. If you do not have a comprehensive policy, some rental companies offer a small fee for coverage. Depending on the company, the fee may be cheaper than a year’s worth of what you’d pay for car rental damage insurance.

- Rental Car Insurance: For the most part, the majority of drivers do not rent cars very often. Insurance companies may push this policy, advocating that in case of an accident this policy will cover the price of a rental car while your vehicle is in the shop. However, renting cars is relatively inexpensive. Over the course of a lifetime, you are likely to pay more for rental car insurance than what it’s really worth.

- Auto Collision Insurance: This policy is usually required for motorists who are loaning cars. However, if you own your own car and it’s completely paid off, this policy is optional. Auto collision insurance may be unnecessary especially if you are driving an older vehicle, since repairs may cost more than what the vehicle is worth.

Before changing your policy, always consult your auto insurance provider first. If you or someone you love is looking to purchase car insurance, contact a Chicago car insurance agent of Insure on the Spot at 773-202-5060 today.

Insurance rates expected to increase

Posted on October 20th, 2011 No Comments

According to the Insurance Information Institute, auto insurance is expected to rise an additional 4% this year. In just two years, between 2008-2010, rates jumped by 10%.

Insurance rates have continued to steadily increase over the past decade. By the end of 2011, rates will have gone up 31% since 2000. The national annual average in 2000 of $690 has risen to nearly $900 a year. Car insurance companies say policies are becoming more expensive as costs of vehicle repairs and medical expenses continue to rise.

Another factor in the hike is the growing number of motorists who are not insured. Nearly 16% of all drivers are not covered, which costs everyone, even with insurance, more money.

Protection against car-deer accidents

Posted on October 11th, 2011 No Comments

If you hit a deer, are you covered by your car insurance? If you have a comprehensive car insurance policy, your insurance will cover the repair costs to your car. October, November, and December are the three months with the highest car-deer related accidents because deer begin to migrate and mate in the fall.

Drivers with an older car may not think it’s worth forking over the money in high premiums with comprehensive coverage, but older cars (and used cars) have seen an increase in worth. Damage to your car after a collision with an animal may be worth the cost of a better protection policy.

Motorists who are renting a car and plan on driving through areas with dense populations of deer are encouraged to purchase lost damage waivers if they do not have comprehensive coverage. Lost damage waivers usually cost $9 to $19 a day and will protect you against any damage that may happen to the car.

New auto insurance program on the rise

Posted on October 3rd, 2011 No Comments

More and more auto insurance companies are adopting a new program, called pay-as-you-drive (or PAYD). PAYD car insurance will mold your policy depending on how many miles you drive.

Government officials and industry professionals are advocating for the new program because they hope it will encourage drivers to drive less. Driving less can reduce the number of car accidents and deaths, pollution, traffic, and possibly saving billions in economic costs annually. Several state and federal officials are urging more to participate in the PAYD program.

The Brookings Institute estimates that if all motorists had PAYD auto insurance, oil consumption would be reduced by 4%, carbon dioxide by 2%, driving by 8%, and save nearly $60 billion in economic costs.

If your are interested in learning more about the PAYD program while shopping for auto insurance, ask the companies about the kinds of policies available. Make your search quick and easy by contacting a Chicago car insurance agent of Insure on the Spot at 773-202-5060.

Online car insurance comparisons most efficient

Posted on September 26th, 2011 No Comments

A new consumer alert by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) suggests using online auto insurance comparison websites, like Insure on the Spot, to find and compare insurance quotes most efficiently as well as cost-effectively.

The NAIC states a good way to start your search is to find out what level of insurance is needed. It suggests purchasing more than your state’s minimum insurance requirements since most accidents exceed those costs in damages, costs which could come out of your pocket. The Insurance Information Institute recommends looking at a company’s quality of customer care, financial standings, and stance with regulators in your state before purchasing insurance.
