Under Illinois law, the parental liability for auto insurance when a teen gets into an accident can occur if a teenager is running an errand for the family during the time when the accident occurs.
Therefore if a child uses a parent’s car to do his or her own business, the parent’s insurance should not be effected. Each of theses situations are determined on a case-by-case basis.
Courts have found family errands to include anything from a child going to the the grocery store to pick up food for the family or picking up shoes from a shoe repair shop. These situations are deemed a family errand because parents are supposed to feed and clothe their children.
