May is National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

Posted on May 14th, 2012 No Comments

May is the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration-sponsored National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. The national initiative is aimed to have all motorists share the road and to exercise extra caution during “motorcycle season.”

Riders want to raise awareness to all drivers that more motorcycles will be hitting the road as weather warms up. Many motorcyclists claim that most motorcycle-car accidents are caused by drivers who do not see riders approaching.

Perhaps most deadly are left-hand turns, which accounts for half of all motorcycle fatalities in Illinois. In 2010, 131 people lost their lives in motorcycle accidents, according to the National Highway Safety Administration.

If you are a motorcyclist, it’s imperative to exercise caution as well. Since motorcyclists are more likely to be injured in accidents, it is important to carry motorcycle insurance. If you are looking for affordable motorcycle insurance, contact the motorcycle insurance agents of Insure on the Spot today at 1-888-972-7283.

Report finds half of drivers fail to use turn signal

Posted on May 8th, 2012 No Comments

A new report by the Society of Automotive Engineers suggests that nearly half of all drivers fail to use their turn signal or forget to turn them off when changing lanes. The society estimates that about two million accidents are caused each year due to poor turn signal use.

These figures translate to 750 billion turn signal violations each year. The dangers of misusing a turn signal result in more accidents annually than distracted driving. The findings are consist with a 2006 survey conducted by Response Insurance.

According to Response Insurance’s survey, 42 percent said they didn’t have time and 23 percent admitted they were too lazy.

If you have been cited for not using your turn signal, you could lose your good driver discount. For a free car insurance quote, contact the car insurance agents of Insure on the Spot by calling 1-888-972-7283.

Ways to save on teens’ car insurance

Posted on May 1st, 2012 No Comments

Car insurance for teenagers will always be more costly than more experienced drivers, but that doesn’t mean parents are doomed to pay exorbitant prices until their kids turn 20. Below are a few tips to help make those teen years a little financially easier.

- Taking a defensive driving course can not only help teach your teen important safety tips, but it also lowers insurance premiums.
- Many companies offer good student discounts if young drivers earn a B or higher in high school and college.
- If your child goes to college less than a 100 miles away from home and does not take the car, you could save on high premiums.
- Shop around for the best price. Some insurance companies might have great rates for you, but they could be much higher for your new driver.

If you are shopping around for affordable car insurance, contact the car insurance agents of Insure on the Spot today at 1-888-972-7283.

A 19 year-old passenger in the taxi was ejected from the vehicle and is in serious to critical condition at Mount Sinai Hospital. The 41 year-old taxi driver is also suffering from serious injuries. Two other passengers in the taxi were also transported to the hospital, but their conditions are not known.

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month

Posted on April 17th, 2012 No Comments

In the past five years, as texting and cellphones have become more and more common, distracted driving has become a major safety concern in the United States. Created by the United States Department of Transportation, April has been named the National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

In the state of Illinois, all cellphone use– whether handheld or hands-free– is banned for new drivers and bus drivers. Motorists can use their phones for calls anywhere except construction and school zones, but texting and driving is banned for all drivers throughout the state.

Earlier this year, the federal government passed a law banning handheld phones for all commercial drivers. Drivers who violate the national law could face a fine of up to $2,750.

If you have been in an accident because you were on your phone, chances are your car insurance has drastically increased. To find a quote for affordable car insurance, contact the car insurance agents of Insure on the Spot today at 1-888-972-7283.

Deadly accidents increase on Tax Day, says study

Posted on April 10th, 2012 No Comments

A new study has found that deadly car accidents increase on Tax Day. The reason for the increase is speculation, but it could be contributed to extra stress, driving on unfamiliar routes to the post office, speeding to make the deadline, and even drinking.

Data from 1980 to 2009 compiled from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration revealed that auto accident deaths on Tax Day, usually April 15, increase by six percent compared to any other day in April.

While six percent may not sound very high, that’s about 13 more deaths per day. The researchers took note of the electronic filing options, which became available in 1986, but e-filing appears to have no effect on Tax Day fatalities.

If you plan on being out and about on Tax Day, it is important to be extra alert and cautious. Accidents can happen at anytime and it is important to be insured to make sure medical bills and repairs are covered. Man gets 9 years for DUI crash that injured seven

Posted on April 3rd, 2012 No Comments

A 62 year-old former city worker was sentenced to nine years in prison last week after he crashed into a group of pedestrians, injuring seven. The man was in a city truck and drinking a bottle of brandy when he jumped the curb and drove into a crowd.

The crash happened last May, and some victims are still recovering from their injuries. When authorities arrested the intoxicated driver, his blood alcohol content was measured at more than twice the legal limit.

His sentence is relatively short compared to the maximum 24 years he faced. The man pleaded guilty to the charges and issued an apology to the victims.

Chicago listed as city with worst speed traps

Posted on March 27th, 2012 No Comments

Chicago made Yahoo’s top ten list of U.S. cities with the worst speed traps, coming in at number nine with 153 speed traps. According to the director of the Highway Safety Group, speed limits have become revenue generators instead of ways to conserve fuel.

The group’s director contributes a large number of Chicago’s speed traps to the use of red-light cameras and outdated traffic-control devices. He also notes that speed limits, as well as the court’s enforcement of them, on Chicago’s interstates are controlled by local politicians.

A particularly bad speed trap is near Lake Shore Drive. Low speed limits are posted as motorists approach the entrance to Lake Shore Drive, which then opens up to six lanes. Less than a mile later, police catch the most drivers where the speed limit is 40 mph.

If you are pulled over for speeding and do not have car insurance, you could face a hefty fine and your driving privileges may be suspended. If you are looking for cheap auto insurance, contact the auto insurance agents of Insure on the Spot at (773) 202-5060.

The teenager suffered from a laceration on his jugular and the mother has a lacerated liver; a fractured ankle, rib, shoulder, pelvis, and teeth; and a herniated diaphragm.

Illinois one of the cheapest states for car insurance

Posted on March 14th, 2012 No Comments

Illinois has been ranked #41 in Insure.com’s new national survey of most and least expensive states for car insurance. Illinois residents pay an average of $1,192 a year for insurance, more than half what residents in Louisiana, the most expensive state, pays.

While driving records and the type of car people own are significant factors in determining rates, there are other factors outside of the driver’s control that contribute to cost. Recent natural disasters, high crime rates, and large populations of uninsured drivers can also increase prices.

States with less expensive insurance rates usually have light traffic, competitive rates between insurance companies, and low crime rates.

Insurance can help cover medical expenses, repairs, and charges in auto accidents. It is also required by law to carry car insurance. If you are in the market for affordable car insurance, contact the car insurance agents of Insure on the Spot by calling (773) 202-5060 today.
