Tips for Freeway Driving

Many new drivers feel anxious about getting onto the freeway for the first time; even more experienced drivers may dread the experience. This is understandable. Between the high driving speeds, the challenge of merging, and the need to constantly look out for your exit, freeway driving can certainly be stressful. Fortunately, with practice and safety education, anyone can master freeway driving.

Some simple tips to calm down and keep yourself safe include:

  • Practice your on-ramp driving skills. Remember, the key to entering freeway traffic is to never stop; this can cause a serious collision with the car behind you. As soon as you enter the on-ramp, you need to start getting up to freeway speed. Once you are on the freeway, it’s time to merge left before your lane ends. You may need to speed up or slow down to merge, but do not stop.
  • Do not panic about getting to your exit. This is a common source of anxiety for drivers, and can lead to sloppy errors if you let it get carried away. A few miles before your exit, begin moving over to the correct lane. If traffic will not allow you to do so, it is not the end of the world. Getting off the freeway one or two exits later will not ruin your travel plans. Stay relaxed.
  • Stay right. Many new drivers make the mistake of remaining in the left lane – after all, there is usually less traffic there, so traveling is a little easier. However, there is a reason traffic tends to be sparse in the far-left lane: it is reserved for passing cars. Keep to the far-right or middle lanes unless you need to pass the car ahead of you.

The most important rules are to trust yourself and avoid panicking. Freeway driving can be safe, efficient, and even fun as long as you pay attention to your surroundings and follow the rules.
