The Facts about Speeding

Driving above the speed limit is one of the most common criminal offenses in the US. Most drivers have committed it at one point, whether unknowingly, while in a hurry, or as a regular habit. However, there are good reasons for this practice to be illegal. Studies have shown that speeding is the most frequent – and among the most preventable – cause of major car accidents.

If you have been involved in an accident or received a traffic ticket, your insurance rates may increase. Fortunately, the car insurance experts of Insure on the Spot are here to help ensure that you are getting the best available deal on Chicago auto insurance. Call us at 773-202-5060.

The Many Risks of Speeding

The next time your car’s speedometer begins to rise above the legal limit, you may want to remember some of these statistics:

  • Driving either above or below the posted speed limit can be dangerous. One study reported that people driving within 5 to 15 miles above or below the limit were 6 times more likely to be involved in crashes than other drivers.
  • Despite the fact that slow drivers are also more likely to be in accidents, speeding is still generally considered more dangerous. This is due to the increased impact of collisions that occur while speeding. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that speeding is a factor in about 1/3 of fatal car accidents.
  • Speeding cars are even more dangerous to pedestrians than they are to drivers or passengers. The fatality rate for pedestrians struck by cars traveling at 40 mph is 85%, compared to only 5% for accidents involving cars traveling at 20 mph.

The rate of serious car accidents could be greatly reduced if more drivers would simply obey the speed limit and other traffic laws.
