Maintain Your Tires to Prevent Accidents

When tires begin to wear out, you may face increasing difficulties keeping your vehicle under control. Keeping your tires in good condition is important in order to improve the functioning of your vehicle as well as reducing the risk of accidents. One of the simplest ways to maintain your tires is through checking and adjusting your tire pressure on a regular basis.

Inflating Your Tires

Be sure to keep this advice in mind when inflating your tires:

  • Check pressure at least once a month, or whenever the temperature changes drastically. Temperature can have a strong effect on your tires and may require that you add or remove air.
  • Check pressure on “cold” tires, meaning they have not been driven on for at least three hours. The friction of tires on the road causes them to heat up, thus giving you an inaccurate pressure reading.
  • Check your owner’s manual for the proper pressure levels. Many people inflate their tires to the levels printed on the tire. However, this number is the maximum amount of pressure the tire can hold. The number in your owners’ manual takes into account the weight and handling of your particular vehicle.
  • Use a reliable tire pressure gauge. Simply looking at your tires to determine if they are inflated to the correct levels is not a reliable means of measurement, since tires at drastically different pressure levels can look identical.

Keeping tires at proper levels can decrease your risk of an accident as it limits the likelihood that a tire will burst due to overinflation or separate due to irregular wear caused by underinflation.
