Drinking and Driving

We all know that driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is both dangerous and illegal. Alcohol and other drugs affect your reflexes, judgment, and coordination – all of which makes it very difficult to operate a motor vehicle safely. Unfortunately, although drunk driving rates have gone down since the laws became more strict, this dangerous behavior persists across the country.

The next time you are out at a party or bar, you may want to keep some of the following consequences of impaired driving in mind:

  • Increased risk of injury or death. Illinois is the number five state in the nation when it comes to annual drunk driving fatalities. In 2006, 540 Illinoisans were killed in alcohol-related traffic accidents. Even if you are willing to take chances with your own life, would you want to cause an accident that takes someone else’s?
  • Jail time. Depending on the circumstances of your case, and your number of prior convictions, you could spend anywhere from 72 hours to three years in jail. Even after you are released, you will have to live with a drunk driving conviction and jail time on your record.
  • Financial losses. This may seem like a relatively minor concern, but the costs associated with a drunk driving conviction can be severe. Court fines alone can range from $1,000 to $10,000, depending on your number of prior convictions. This is not counting the cost of attorney fees or the expense of renewing your driver’s license.
  • In addition to the expenses named above, you will probably have to ask your Chicago insurance provider to file an SR-22 form. This will confirm that your company is aware of your conviction. Unfortunately, this can cause the price of your Chicago car insurance premiums to become much higher.

If your Chicago auto insurance company has dropped your coverage or has become unaffordable due to a drunk driving conviction, Insure on the Spot can help. We work with high risk drivers of all kinds to help them find adequate insurance coverage.
